Considering the environment
The teachers looked at the classroom environment with the following belief in mind:
The environment facilitates learning, encourages investigations, and stimulates creativity.
Armed with this knowledge they set up their rooms. Great attention is given to the look and feel of the classroom. With each item, the teachers assessed the purpose and benefit of placement. Mirrors are mounted in the construction area so children experience a different perspective on building. Mirrors serve as a reference for children when making self-portraits and mirrors placed in the science area allow the experiment to be seen from all angles. Fabric is hung for designation of a space or for use with over head projectors. The teachers organize the space for small and large group projects. Documentation, plants, and collections are displayed at the children’s level. The children bring color to the classroom through their work. The softer tones throughout the room provide a feeling on calmness and spaciousness. Thought is given to traffic patterns, noise levels, furniture, and lighting. The teachers continue to assess the classroom environment throughout the school year.
